The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has made it mandatory for all the eSign service providers including banks to start accepting Aadhaar Virtual ID from July 2018 instead of the Aadhaar number. Here’s all you need to know about the Virtual ID and how you can generate one.

What is Aadhaar Virtual ID?

Virtual Identification is a 16-digit random number that is marked to one’s Aadhaar number and can only be generated, replaced or revoked by the owner of the Aadhaar number. The Virtual ID has been introduced to strengthen privacy and provide multi-layered security to Aadhaar holders and can be used for authentication purpose in the same way the Aadhaar number is used.

As of now, to avail of any financial services, you were required to provide the 12-digit Aadhaar number along with the OTP (One Time Password) received on your registered mobile number. From now on, instead of giving out your Aadhaar number, you can simply provide the 16-digit Virtual ID to the company to perform Aadhaar-based authentication.
