Are you relocating to a new state and are worried about how your vehicle should be transferred and registered at the new location? The process of moving your vehicle from one state to another can be quite tedious and confusing. If you do not have a clear picture of how to do this, you could end up paying a lot of money to middlemen to get things sorted or you might have to run around different from one office to another to get the transfer done.

NOC from your bank
In case your vehicle has been financed by a bank, that is, you have bought it with a Car Loan, you need to obtain the state transfer NOC from the concerned bank. You have to visit the bank from where you took the loan along with the application and required documents (job transfer letter, address proof, ID proof) and get the NOC certificate.
The bank will do a validation before issuing a No Objection Certificate for state transfer of the vehicle.
NOC from the RTO
You need to submit an NOC form to the RTO office where your vehicle is registered. Form 27 and Form 28 needs to be submitted to the RTO office along with these documents:
- Application requesting for an NOC for interstate transfer
- Registration certificate, insurance papers, tax documents, emission test papers
- Original chassis imprint of the vehicle
- 3-4 copies of CMV Form 28
- NOC copy obtained from the bank
- NOC from the traffic police stating that you do not have any pending amount due under your name for traffic violations
Once the RTO issues the NOC certificate, you can arrange for a carrier to move your vehicle from one state to another.
Re-registering your car
Once your car has been relocated to the desired destination, it needs to be re-registered. So, you need to revisit the RTO office along with the following documents:
- Duly filled Form 27-30 for the purpose of re-registration
- Original RC copy
- Insurance copy of the car
- Bank and RTO’s NOC copies
- Original chassis imprint of the vehicle
- Emission test certificate
- Photo ID and local address proof
- Passport size photographs
- Applicable fees like road tax and octroi charges. Note that this could be as much as Rs. 50,000 depending on your vehicle and the state to which you are moving.

You might need to produce the vehicle before your RTO. Once you submit all these documents at the RTO office and your vehicle has been inspected, a new number is issued for your vehicle. Typically it takes two days to receive your new number. In case it takes longer than that, you might have to pay a visit the RTO office to check the status.
It’s always advisable to start the process of obtaining NOCs from the bank, traffic police and local RTO office a couple of weeks in advance, before you start the actual process as it might take 1-2 weeks to get the NOC certificates.
Once you have all the documents in place, the entire process of interstate vehicle transfer should not be a concern at all!
