Hi Krishna,
Thank you for stopping by. DigiLocker is nothing but a digital locker to store all your documents. As part of the government’s Digital India drive, it is available both on websites and mobile apps and all data is stored in the cloud.
DigiLocker is linked to an individual’s Aadhaar card and cellphone number and eliminates the use of physical documents. Once you upload a document in your DigiLocker account, you can also e-sign the uploaded documents, which works like self-attestation of the physical documents.
Remember that the storage space provided is 1 GB, and the individual file size for upload cannot exceed 10 MB.
Here are the steps to upload your documents in DigiLocker:
1. Go to the DigiLocker website or downloand the DigiLocker app on your smartphone. Using your Aadhaar number and mobile number you can create a user ID using an OTP.
2. Click the upload icon to start uploading a document. In the file upload dialog box, locate the file from your local drive and select ‘open’ to complete the uploading.
3. To assign a document type to your uploaded file, click ‘select doc type’. This will show a pop up with a drop down selection of various document types. Choose the appropriate document type and click ‘save’.
4. You can also edit the name of the file using the edit icon next to the filename.
5. Once uploaded, you can access your digital documents anytime, anywhere and also share it online.
To avoid the risk of losing or damaging your vital documents such as driving licence, voter ID card or education certificates, you can keep all such documents safely inside your house and carry only the e-copies on your phone using the DigiLocker mobile app.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification that a digital copy of documents such as driving license and a vehicle’s registration, insurance etc. which are stored in DigiLocker mobile app, will now be accepted legally. Original papers or photocopy of the same is no longer mandatory. Hope this will address your concern!
