Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is believed to be in talks with Italian and British two-wheeler manufacturers to build premium bikes for the Indian market. Top officials aware of the development said Triumph and Moto Guzzi are few of the companies that M&M has conducted discussions with.
M&M had lately entered the two-wheeler segment by buying Pune-based Kinetic and is thinking of introducing products by itself in the mid-segment of the two-wheeler market. But the company is eager to enter a global association for the hi-end segment of the sector, which is highly image-conscious. But when asked, the leading company officials refused to give out the information about the hi-end two-wheeler manufacturers.
The two-wheeler division of M&M which started selling gearless scooters from September last year sold about 10,000 units in January after having an average sales of about 7000 units per month. The company has an aim of selling 15,000 units per month by April 2010. Anoop Mathur, president, Two Wheeler Sector, M&M said, “We have achieved an unprecedented milestone of selling 10,000 vehicles in the month of January within 4 months of launch of our scooter portfolio. In a relatively short time, we have developed a robust system which is poised to deliver a sustainable growth path”.
