The government has made it mandatory for all banking institutions to verify and link Aadhaar ID of all customers with their respective bank accounts by December 31, 2017. To ensure that you have done the linking, follow these steps.
The government from June 2017 has made it mandatory for all financial institutions, including bank account holders to verify and link their Aadhaar card to their accounts by December 31, 2017. According to a government notification, if this is not done within the stipulated timeline, your bank account will become inoperable.
Let’s take a look at a few important points to know why the bank account should be linked and how to check it.
Why It Should Be Done?
There are two reasons why the government wants you to link the two. The first is that the government wants to send subsidies directly into your account to ensure probity in government fund transfers. The second reason is that linking of Aadhaar card will enable the government to keep a track of illegal funds being transferred to any account in contravention of the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
How To Check
It is likely that you furnished your Aadhaar card details as an identity proof or address proof when you opened your bank account. To ensure that you have successfully done the mapping, follow these steps:
1. Using Internet Banking Facility
Use your internet banking facility by logging into your account and then do the following: You can either click on the Request tab or click on the view/update option to check if your Aadhaar number is mapped to your bank account.
2. Go to UIDAI Homepage
The next option is to visit the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Homepage.
Click on the tab Aadhaar Services. This will take you to Check Aadhaar & Bank Account Linking Status. Once you click on this, it will take you to the Aadhaar Online Services
After clicking on this tab, enter your Aadhaar number and a security code will appear. Enter the security code following which an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP and click the Login tab. You will then reach an authentication screen. Here too, you will have to enter your Aadhaar number and the accompanying security code. Once you have done this, your mapping status will appear on the screen.
3. Using Mobile Without Internet
You can also check if your Aadhaar is linked by using what is called the *99*99 service. This service is available even without using the internet.
You can access this service using the common code of *99*99# irrespective of your mobile service provider. You also don’t have to pay anything for this service and this service is available even on holidays.
Use The Following Steps:
- Dial *99 *99# from your mobile phone
- A screen will appear wherein you will enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number
- Once you have entered your Aadhaar number a confirmation screen will appear
- Confirm your Aadhaar number by entering 1 and then press submit
- A confirmation screen linking the Aadhar number with your latest updated bank account details will appear
Note:
- The mapping status will show only the latest updated bank account details and not show previously linked accounts in case you have multiple accounts.
- If you have multiple bank accounts, then contact the bank’s customer care or check internet banking facility.
- Step 2 & 3 will not be valid if your mobile phone number is not linked to your Aadhaar Card
