4 Aadhaar Linking Deadlines That You Need To Remember

By Saroni Chakravarti | December 12, 2017

Finding it difficult keeping a track of all those documents that need Aadhaar linking? Not sure what’s the deadline for completing the linking? Here’s a ready reckoner of all things important with regard to Aadhaar seeding.

Much has been debated, discussed and dismissed about Aadhaar linking or the legality of it. The latest is that the government has requested the Supreme Court to postpone the hearing on the legality of Aadhaar. It has also expressed its willingness to extend the Aadhaar linking deadlines.

Still, the fact remains. You need to mandatorily link Aadhaar to certain documents before the year draws to a close. Here’s a handy list of all the documents and deadlines that will need your attention for Aadhaar linking.

  1. Aadhaar and PAN linking by December 31, 2017

The government had mandated that it would accept income tax returns (ITR) filed after July 1, 2017 only if the taxpayers have linked their PAN with Aadhaar.

Even when the deadline was extended to Aug 5, 2017, people faced trouble in doing so owing to mismatch of PAN and Aadhaar details. The government revised the deadline to December 31, 2017 for those who’ve filed their ITRs on or before August 5, 2017, but haven’t linked their PAN with Aadhaar.

In the last Budget, the government mandated linking Aadhaar and PAN for every PAN holder (except certain categories exempted via notification dated May 11, 2017).

Those who don’t need to file ITR as per tax laws (gross total income in a financial year of less than Rs. 2.5 lakhs) can breathe easy. The last date to link your PAN with Aadhaar is yet to be notified.

All customers need to link their Aadhaar with bank accounts, Credit Cards, insurance policies, equity and Mutual Fund investments, small savings schemes like Public Provident Fund, Kisan Vikas Patra, National Savings Certificate, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana and so on.

Any loan taken from a bank, housing finance company, or non-banking finance company will also require your Aadhaar details.

An amendment in the Prevention of Money Laundering Rules (Maintenance and Records), 2005 requires all banks, and financial institutions to get all their customers know-your-customer (KYC) compliant.

To become KYC compliant, one needs to furnish his/her PAN and Aadhaar details to his/her bank. On missing the December 31 deadline, his/her account will become inoperable.

You will also need to undergo an authentication process to verify that the Aadhaar submitted by you is actually yours.
