Bajaj to build cars on Renault platform

By | April 19, 2010

Bajaj Auto, which is intending to introduce four-wheelers in passenger and commercial vehicle section in 2012, will use the Renault platform for their manufacture. The platform is being built and it will distribute common features, meeting the needs of passenger vehicles and goods carriers, according to Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj.

Mr Bajaj said, “Our four-wheelers are due in 2012. It will be a new platform. But the project is a common one with Renault, and on a common platform. The basic structure of the vehicle – the engine, transmission, chassis – will be common”. He was talking to reporters at the introduction of 2 new three-wheeler products.

Bajaj Auto, which in previous September declared its plans to launch three-wheelers under the Bajaj RE brand, said the four-wheeled commercial vehicle could suit the RE brand. But  “the passenger vehicle will not fit in the RE brand”, according to Mr Bajaj.

Bajaj had said previous year that they were slowly withdrawing the GC 1000 and Mega brands. RC Maheshwari, CEO, Bajaj Auto’s three-wheeler business, said they have already withdrawn the GC 1,000 brand 4 months earlier. It will be substituted by another to refurbish its three-wheeler range. The refurbishment comprises the introduction of 2 new platforms this quarter. Earlier  Mr Bajaj has been disapproving of the appearances and aesthetics of the three-wheeler.
