United Bank of India has opened its 1,474th branch at Mithipur in Murshidabad district. The branch was opened as part of its plans to make available banking services to people in West Bengal and was inaugurated by the Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee.
The bank also disbursed loans amounting to Rs 10.13 crore to 3,837 beneficiaries such as small and marginal farmers, minority, women and physically challenged people at a credit delivery camp.
Addressing reporters, the minister lauded the efforts of the bank in accelerating the flow of credit to different priority areas of the government as well as opening bank branches in unbanked rural areas and appeal to borrowers and also appealed to the borrowers for timely repayment of bank loans so as to enable banks to recycle the funds for further productive purpose.
According to Chairman and Managing Director, Mr S C Gupta, 130 branches are to be opened during 2009-10, out of which 29 branches would be opened in West Bengal.
