Pushed by robust volumes of the Pulsar and Discover, Bajaj Auto, India’2nd biggest two-wheeler maker, has reported a 112% increase in motorcycle sales in January to 2.33 lakh units, as against 1.09 units a year back. Total sales of 2 and 3 wheelers doubled to 2.7 lakh units, while exports went up by 33% to 71,695 units.
Bajaj Auto managing director, Rajiv Bajaj said Pulsar and Discover bikes comprised about 70% of the sales volumes. He said that the sales of the Pulsar at 71,970 units during the past month were the highest of all time.
Bajaj Auto, which has introduced the Pulsar 135 lately, sold about 28,000 units of this model. He said that that there was no cannibalization and all the Pulsar models have done very well was comforting to the company. He added the company’s full growth has occurred due to competition. Due to robust volumes, the company’s market share went up to 32% from about 21% a year back.
The company plans to raise its market share to about 35% by March. Hero Honda, who is the market leader in two wheelers, has a market share of about 51%.
Hero Honda has accounted its finest ever January sales at 3.89 lakh units, an increase of 24% year-on-year.
