Car loan lender SBI to offer bank account for only Re. 1

The biggest car loan lender of the country, State Bank of India has introduced one more initiative to target the comparatively weaker divisions. Poor workers and small businessmen in cities will now be able to open bank accounts for mere Re1.

They can access all banking amenities such as deposits and petty cash withdrawals and earn interest. SBI has used biometric smartcards to promote this initiative.

This is the 1st facility in the country. The bank has introduced 20 kiosks called Customer Service Points (CSPs) in various parts of Hyderabad.

These kiosks would function as mini banks and will be managed by a business correspondent (BC).

Mr Diwakar Gupta, Deputy MD, SBI, opened a kiosk along with Mr D. Prasada Rao, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Revenue, at Nimboliadda. He said the initiative would meet the requirements of financial inclusion in the urban regions.

He said, “SBI has already opened over 70 lakh accounts under financial inclusion in the rural areas. This new initiative will further drive the expansion”.

Mr Shiv Kumar, Chief GM, SBI-AP said, “We will be expanding this to other urban centres in the State soon.”
