Aadhaar and PAN linking by December 31, 2017
The government had mandated that it would accept income tax returns (ITR) filed after July 1, 2017 only if the taxpayers have linked their PAN with Aadhaar.
Even when the deadline was extended to Aug 5, 2017, people faced trouble in doing so owing to mismatch of PAN and Aadhaar details. The government revised the deadline to December 31, 2017 for those who’ve filed their ITRs on or before August 5, 2017, but haven’t linked their PAN with Aadhaar.
In the last Budget, the government mandated linking Aadhaar and PAN for every PAN holder (except certain categories exempted via notification dated May 11, 2017).
Those who don’t need to file ITR as per tax laws (gross total income in a financial year of less than Rs. 2.5 lakhs) can breathe easy. The last date to link your PAN with Aadhaar is yet to be notified.
