Merc likely to introduce its small car in India

Luxury car maker Mercedes Benzis intending to introduce its small car, the A Class, in India in a couple of years. Peter Trettin, president and CEO of Daimler, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, said the company would market the A Class as its entry- level car in India. He said, “This will be lower priced in line with competition”.

But industry sources say that even the entry level Mercedes will cost Rs 16-20 lakh.

Mercedes Benz officials have been thinking about launching this car in India for more than a decade, but they went on delaying the introduction. Sources say this might be because of doubts over if an expensive entry-level car would find sufficient buyers here.

But Mr Trettin was optimistic. He said, “In the region I look after, India is a growth market and demand is growing because the economy is growing”.

Wilfried Aulbur, Mercedes Benz India managing director and CEO, said sales have increased since December. He said, “In 2010, our segment grew 80%, but Mercedes Benz has grown 157% and this is without the GL launch”. The Mercedes Benz GL Class is a hybrid sports utility vehicle and it competes, size wise with Audi’s Q7 and BMW’s X5.
