If you own a vehicle, you will know how important an RC book/card is. In India, it’s mandatory to have a copy with you while you are driving. An RC or Registered Certificate copy is a document which proves that your vehicle has been duly registered with the RTO authorities.

Today, you will receive your RC copy in the form of a Smart Card. This card will have the registration date, registration number, chassis number, engine number, vehicle type, colour of the vehicle, model number, seating capacity and a host of other information relating to your vehicle. So, it is impossible for anyone to fool the policeman with the wrong smart card, except if he doesn’t know how to read!

But, what do you do if you lose the original smart card of your vehicle? Well, don’t panic! It’s not difficult to obtain a duplicate one if you know the process and have all the required documents in place.

Learn the simple process of obtaining a duplicate RC smart card with us, right here!

Here’s what you need to do

  • First of all, you need to register a police complaint at the nearest police station giving details about where you lost the RC card. You need to mention the vehicle’s registration number, car/bike model, engine number, your name and address, and chassis number of the vehicle on your police complaint.
  • The police will then issue a challan saying ‘RC card lost’.
  • Download, print and fill Form 26 from the RTO official website.
  • If you took the vehicle on loan, you need to get the signature of the financier on Form 26. This will be in duplicate.
  • In case the vehicle has been bought with a loan, you may also need to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the lending bank, mentioning that they have no issue with the RTO giving you a duplicate RC card.
  • A triplicate copy of the form should have the endorsement of the authority that registered your vehicle.
  • Get a photocopy of the motor insurance paper, driving license and emission test paper.
  • Submit the documents to the registering authority.
  • Pay the fees for the duplicate smart card.

The right way to do it

  • First of all, buy a blank file to keep all your papers. Mention your name, mobile number and the words ‘Duplicate RC card request’ on the file
  • Get an affidavit made on a Stamp Paper worth Rs. 20, mentioning all the details of the vehicle and the fact that the RC card is missing.
  • Put all your documents (Form 26 duly filled, photocopies of the emission test, DL, insurance papers, 3 passport photographs, identity proof, local address proof) in the file. Submit the file to the Superintendent of the RTO office.
  • The Superintendent will then verify the documents and sign them.
  • You then need to visit the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) for verification your ID proof and attest the form.
  • Thereafter, you need to pay the required fees and collect the receipt.
  • Take the file along with the cash receipt to the Superintendent again, and he will verify and sign the cash receipt too.
  • Submit the file at the counter where the files are collected and obtain an acknowledgement.
  • The acknowledgement will mention the date by which you can expect your documents. Keep this handy. You will receive your RC card by post at the postal address mentioned on the form.

Note:

  • Some states might ask you to provide your road tax receipt.
  • The process of getting a duplicate RC card might vary slightly from state to state.

That’s all you need to do to obtain a duplicate RC card. We hope now you have a clear picture of the entire process.

Now, how about making sure that your vehicle is secure?

      Hi Suraj,

Thanks for writing to us. We’re sorry to hear of your trouble. Well, to transfer the ownership of the vehicle in case it is purchased by someone else, the name of the buyer has to be added in the registration certificate as the owner of the vehicle instead of the name of the previous owner. In order to do so, Form 29 has to be submitted with all the details of the transferor and transferee.
Please click here to see the entire list of documents needed for transferring the ownership of the vehicle.
      Hope this helps!
