Google Pixel 3: What To Expect And Not

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be launched in India on November 1. Here’s what to expect and what not to expect from the launch.

There’s no denying the fact that India’s smartphone market is a lucrative one for smartphone manufacturers. In the run up to the launch, smartphone makers get hold of the best marketing and advertising minds and pull out all stops to make their smartphones stand out among others.

The Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL is set to hit the Indian market on November 1. Like most brands these days, right after its global launch, Google too roped in key social media influencers to spread the word and build up genuine intent for its new phone once it hits the Indian markets. Google had announced its first Pixel flagship phones – the Pixel and Pixel XL – back in 2016. With this, it retired its equally popular Nexus phones.

On that note, let’s take a look at what you can expect from the third generation of Pixels.

Here are the Pixel 3’s specifications at a glance:

Display 5.50 inch
Processor 2.5 GHz octa-core
Front camera 8-megapixel + 8-megapixel
Resolution 1,080 x 2,160 pixels
RAM 4 GB
OS Android 9.0
Storage 64 GB/128 GB
Rear camera 12.2-megapixel
Battery capacity 2,915 mAh

It is a commonly held belief that only iPhones deliver a premium smartphone experience because of its stability. Android is more known for its massy appeal than its premium-ness. This belief, however, gets turned on its head with the Google Pixel 3. If you’ve been mulling a switch from iOS to Android for some time, you should pick the Pixel 3 to make the leap. While there are worthy contenders in the premium Android phone space like the Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, LG G7+, Nokia etc., Google’s Pixel devices are hard to beat.

Build and design:

The phone’s build is slim and sturdy. This goes to show that the phone makers have found a middle ground between build and design, without severely compromising on either. The entire phone fits snugly into one hand which helps if you’re one of those who prefer to use their smartphone single-handedly. The phone comes in three colour variants – ‘Not Pink’, ‘Clearly White’ and ‘Just Black’. The phone has a glass back (Gorilla Glass 5) that has a smooth yet solid feel to it. The glass back also aids in wireless charging and is compatible with any Qi wireless charger.

The phone has a bunch of sensors – fingerprint sensor, compass/magnetometer, proximity sensor, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope and barometer. It has the power button and the volume rocker on the right that can be conveniently reached with one hand. The bottom of the smartphone has the USB-C port along with the SIM tray. It’s a single SIM device with no expandable storage. This is a real bummer when in today’s day and age, even the iPhone has dual-SIM capability and even sub-prime smartphones come with expandable storage.

Display and sound:

The Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch FHD+ display in the 18:9 form factor. The display is rich as can be evidenced from watching high-resolution YouTube videos, streaming movies or browsing through Instagram. The phone is also sensitive to the slightest touch and rarely hangs. With a stereo-setup that has both the speakers facing you, the sound quality is pretty top-notch. One thing that can get pretty irksome is that at full volume, the phone starts vibrating and that can be a real put-off unless you have a case that can substantially reduce it.

Performance:

The performance of the Google Pixel 3 has to be one of the things that really stands out about the phone. The 4 GB RAM may ostensibly undermine this fact, but, in reality, it doesn’t get in the way of the phone’s performance at all. One can easily switch between over a dozen apps at a time without a glitch. Plus, apps open swiftly at a small tap and the transition between apps is butter-smooth.

Camera:

Google’s Pixel phones are hands down winners here. But the question is whether the Pixel 3 is an improvement over its predecessor. Undoubtedly it is! Google has taken its Pixel phone and made it even better with the Pixel 3.

The top-shot feature hits the ball out of the park – the phone essentially captures the image a couple of seconds before and after you click the shutter button, so that you get to choose the perfect photo. To access this feature, simply swipe up after clicking a photo and the “shots in this photo” option shows up. The photo quality is unparalleled, even in low-light conditions. At the front, the Pixel 3 has two 8 MP shooters which produces awesome social media-worthy selfies and groupies.

Battery life:

The battery life may not hold up when compared to the OnePlus 6, but unless you’re consuming heavy content like too many YouTube videos, heavy gaming, or browsing through social media all day, the battery life is enough to last you through the day. Like all smartphones, the trick to maintaining the battery life lies in keeping the brightness at minimum, turning off the display when you’re not using your device and charging your phone only when the battery drains completely.

Our verdict: Go for the Pixel 3 if you’re yearning for a smartphone with a great snapper and a bunch of other decent features. Also, the phone easily trumps most smartphones available in the market today in terms of overall performance, battery life, UI and performance.
